"When we bought a boat and began sailing on the Mediterranean I found the constant motion of the boat, even in the harbour, was too difficult to master when drawing.  I put painting on hold and accustomed myself to life at sea.

Later, in Cambridge, the little park our house overlooked was an endless source of subject matter and of watching local life. So I went back to painting with some relief, and with a firm floor under me.

In London, I painted many interiors of my parents' house in Fulham which I had to leave, as a memento, and whenever I could escape to the country the landscape was my subject matter."
